One of the event’s honorees, Bill Lynch, received a standing ovation upon being introduced by Leonard Riggio, chairman of Barnes & Noble, one of the gala’s sponsors, and during his remarks put the evening back on track of its overall purpose of raising funds for the Wilbert A. At the start of his campaign for citywide office, the question was whether New York’s first Asian-American lawmaker could channel the devotion of his admirers into broad electoral success.

John Liu
Dominic Carter: "There are some similarities, at least one major similarity between yourself and the City's first African American mayor David Dinkins. And that gentleman's name is Bill Lynch, who the New York Times referred to as 'the rumpled genius.' Bill Lynch played a major role in getting the first black mayor of New York City elected. And Bill Lynch was the key strategist on your campaign."
John Liu: "He certainly was. He ran my campaign. He's a genius.”
By the time Liu hired the firm of ex-Dinkins campaign manager Bill Lynch to run his campaign this year - drawing on Lynch's contacts and skill to keep the jostling coalition partners working together - all the pieces were in place.
